With an abundance of design shows on television and online mediums like Houzz and Pinterest, homeowners have an endless array of design images at their fingertips. They have more sophisticated dreams and expectations for their own spaces, wanting to recreate the gorgeous examples surrounding them. What they often don’t understand is how to design beautiful spaces that also functionally support their busy, multi-tasking families.
That’s where designers like Kimberley Harrison of Kimberley Harrison Interiors come to the rescue. She understands the thoughtfulness and attention to detail that must go into managing these sometimes competing needs.
“I truly believe in listening to my clients needs and wishes. It is their home and should reflect their desires but be infused with designer elements that they wouldn’t find on their own”, says Kimberley.
This home is a lesson in form meeting function, sprinkled with family fun. Light, pretty spaces are anchored with durable furnishings, splashes of color and lively accessories.
“This space was designed for a family of four who wanted a fresh, fun living room that provided ample seating for their extended family during family gatherings. When re-creating this family’s living spaces it was crucial to provide a timeless yet contemporary living room for adult entertaining and a fun colorful family room for family moments.”

The living room features kid-friendly furnishings clad in durable fabrics and is highlighted by a very special photograph.
“The artwork was a photo taken by the owner of her kids that we had blown up on canvas.”
Designer Tip:
If a client requires a lot of seating but is limited on space and flow, I try to incorporate extra seating that can be moved to the sides of the room and pulled forward as needed. I’m a firm believer that if you can afford it, invest in a larger area rug so that at least all pieces are touching it. This will create the illusion of a larger room. “The fireplace was originally old red brick, but the owner did not want to demo it so we had to work around it to create a new polished look to fit with the new room design.”
An added plus? The new fireplace tile is resistant to sticky fingerprints and easy to clean!

“In the family room, the couch was custom made and covered in family friendly Perennials fabric so even though it’s a light color it is highly durable. The coffee table….wait for it, is by IKEA! The client didn’t want to spend a lot with kids giving it a hard workout but wanted something modern.”
“Pops of color were added throughout the home to exemplify the family’s love of life!

Serene rooms decorated in soothing colors bring me peace and those with a pop of color bring me joy. I love adding elements of texture and bold lighting to give a room that well designed look. Kimberley Harrison
