Joshua Tree National Park is just 140 miles east of Los Angeles, but when you arrive, it feels like you have journeyed to a different universe.  A popular destination for hip people of all ages, the park is a beautiful and desolate desert landscape punctuated with gorgeous rock formations and huge cacti.  It is the perfect location for this bohemian cabin available for rent through Airbnb and has a 5 star rating from visitors.

Husband and wife team Kathrin and Brian Smirke, of We Are In Our Element have completed several projects in Joshua Tree; each fit seamlessly into the desert environment and sparkle with their own unique personality.

“Our inspiration comes from the desert itself. The neutral color palette, open sky, and beautiful sunsets created the perfect backdrop for a space that was simple, yet embraced numerous design elements including multiple textures and minimal colors,” says Kathrin.

“At this cabin, we are proud of the unique hand-made lighting throughout. We wanted the space to feel unique so nearly all the lighting from the dining room to the living area were made from re-purposed material from the house or around the desert.”

“We personally build a lot of our furniture and decor pieces and try to source a lot of items through flea markets, eBay and Craigslist. We also try to use reclaimed materials. Most of the wood items in the cabin were made by us from reclaimed wood that we found in the desert.”

The bedroom, although small, has a big impact with a huge custom bed and comfy bedding.

A long soak in this outdoor tub underneath the desert sky would be the perfect ending to the day.

Bio:

We originally moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting (Kathrin) and music (Brian), but since that didn’t appear to be a sustainable career choice as we got older, we transitioned into real estate redevelopment. We were involved in home design and remodeling for a number of years in Los Angeles before embarking on our projects in Joshua Tree.

We are currently completing two additional projects in Joshua Tree and have a third project in the San Bernardino mountains. In Joshua Tree, one is a homestead cabin that we are completely redesigning and the other is a new single family home we are building to resell. In the San Bernardino Mountains, we purchased an old cabin that we will eventually rehab as a mountain getaway, only a few hours from Los Angeles.

When we are not working, we tend to want to spend time in nature, away from the city. Although we live in Los Angeles, we are always looking for an excuse to leave the city and visit the desert, mountains, or the ocean.
