Jamie Herzlinger began her career as a clothing designer. It’s during this time that she learned to love the texture, richness and comfort of luxury fabrics. She experienced the joy that comes from creating designs that reflect the beauty and grace of those who purchase them. And, she came to understand the importance of attention to detail and quality craftsmanship. These concepts continue to influence her current career path in interior design. Based in Scottsdale, Arizona Jamie and her team create interiors that are sophisticated, personal and above all, comfortable.
We asked Jamie about her design journey and to share her thoughts on how to curate beautiful spaces.
When and how did you discover your passion and talent for interior design?
I discovered my talent for interior design by happenstance. While designing clothing for women and having my own label in Manhattan, Jamie Herzlinger, I was often asked to help people with their apartments … and, as they say, the rest is history.
Interior design is shifting as fast as the world of fashion! I find that my clients’ tastes seem to have changed 180 degrees within the past few years. This is very exciting to me as their designer, as it raises the bar for me to be on top of my game more than ever in order to design the most classically elegant and comfortable interiors. Jamie
What is your design philosophy?
To me, a home’s aesthetic should draw on diverse influences within a particular style. One’s home should be beautiful, exciting, thought provoking and emotionally accessible.
Your lighting and art selections bring such life to your designs. Do you have some favorite inspirations for art and lighting?
My sourcing of art and lighting is from all my travels. I am forever collecting images and ideas from being inspired by travel.
Your designs are certainly “of the moment” but also have a timeless quality.
I don’t follow trends. I am very consistent with what I wear and therefore what fabrics I want to live with. For example, I don’t wear prints, so I rarely design with them.
JAMIESHOP is a unique aspect of your website; a source for products and a way for consumers to get your expert advice.
JAMIESHOP came about with consumers calling my office to inquire about my services and if they could start”small” so I thought why not make great design affordable where I can coach them through and they can do the purchasing themselves.
I started JAMIESHOP to give the consumer access to exclusive interior design manufacturers at designer price points. Using beautiful home magazines for inspiration, you have the ability to customize your own project and be able to purchase one piece or an entire home, without having to hire a designer.
My design team and I are so excited to present this stage of the online design experience and look forward to all that is to come.
What is your favorite tip for our readers designing their own spaces?
My favorite tip is always about scale. Make sure the pieces are not too large for the space. More is not better in the discussion on interiors.
You are adept at ensuring your interiors fit their environment, whether East Coast, West Coast or desert.
The key to tying a home’s environment to its setting, is what do you wear when you are in that setting or place? Beach clothes? Then you have a beach house. Ski clothes, a ski house and so on.
You support multiple charities. Why is giving back important to you?
I was raised in a respectfully religious family. Not meaning, we were “religious” but with the idea that the universe is bigger than we are and therefore we need to “pay it forward”. I have always been of that thought, which is why I am happy to support the charities I love.
I have always believed that beautiful rooms should be accessible to everyone. Jamie
