What do you get when you mix beautiful furnishings, splashes of gold and pink, and a touch of the unexpected? You get this eclectic and glamorous Seattle home designed by the very talented Jenny Taylor of August Taylor Design. Jenny prides herself in truly listening to and observing the lives of her clients in order to create spaces that reflect their lifestyle and vision for their homes. And her approach to this newly engaged couples’ home was no different. She was able to design a polished space through perfectly balancing a unique mix of colors and patterns, resulting in a gorgeous home refresh where her clients could embark on their new lives together.

“My clients were recently engaged when I started on the project”, says Jenny. “She was a widow with young kids and he had older children that were out of the house. They made the decision that they would keep some stability for her young children and he would move into her home. After many years of her focusing on priorities other than decorating, the home was in need of a major makeover. They wanted to completely refresh the house and make it ‘their own’; something that they built together. I truly felt honored that they hired me to help create the backdrop to the next chapter in their lives. It was more important than ever that I got it right.”

“We really started from scratch on this home – they wanted a fresh start. All the floors were sanded down and refinished. The stairs were too old to sand down, so we opted to paint those instead. We added crown molding on the main floor, to add some architectural interest and we painted the main floor in Sherwin Williams Westhighland White to brighten up the space.”

“She loves and appreciates textiles and unique fabrics and wanted to use a mix of patterns and color. They also wanted an eclectic feel with some unexpected elements. And most importantly, she wanted a leopard print runner on the stairs! The home is quite small, so my biggest challenge was to create a nice mix of patterns and colors without it looking cluttered and confusing to the eye.”

I wanted it to be fun, bright and cheery, while still feeling calm, cohesive and elegant.

As a dedicated designer, Jenny’s goal is always the same with each and every project:

“To create a space that best reflects the style and life of my client. The best way to reach this goal is by listening to my clients. I listen to everything carefully – sometimes it’s the littlest comments that can really help tap into who they are and what they need.

It could be the young child that walks in and interrupts a meeting, or overhearing their plans from the previous evening. All the little details in their daily life make up their story and help me along the design process.

“There are always a lot of details, meetings, e-mails, fabrics, drawings, paperwork etc. that go into a job. But amongst all the chaos and facets of a project, I am always observing and listening. And, I also try and push a little…sometimes it is necessary in order to get the results that I know will make them happy.”

“The dining room is right off the kitchen and opens up into the living room. Originally, she had the dining room table right in the middle of the space. However, this filled the entire room and left little space for anyone to walk through – it felt tight and didn’t flow. The room had a small bench that ran along the window, but it was too small to be used. It wasn’t functional. I proposed that we rebuild the original bench out to create built-in seating and shift the dining area over. This would give them a nice open space to walk through and also offer them more seating. Since the home is small, I wanted the dining doom to feel like another living area…a place to read, do homework, sit and talk, and of course, eat and entertain.”
