This 2,200 square foot home had a quirky floor plan that didn’t fit its owners needs. What it did have, however, were good bones and a gorgeous setting, so it made sense for this family of four to undertake a major makeover to create a home that was more livable and modern. With two young kids, smart storage solutions were high on the list of priorities as well as an eco-friendly approach to consider the husband’s allergies and their desire for a healthy family home. That’s where Regan Baker of Regan Baker Design came to the rescue. “The family wanted to create a home that was inviting, playful, comfortable, yet modern and practical,” says Regan. “The mother’s father is a jockey who used to ride professionally, so she wanted a comfortable, ranch feel.
“The triangular entry was opened up to create a better visual connection between the dining and living room. To increase organization storage opportunities, we converted an existing wood burning pizza oven (given the clients weren’t huge pizza fans) into a kid’s closet, open bookshelf and linen closet. We also reworked the bathrooms creating a more modern and open layout. Our clients love being outdoors, and also love art given the views of the bay (all 3 bridges), the floor to ceiling doors act as art to frame the beautiful views of the bay.
“We also had to ensure that all finishes were eco-friendly to support a healthy home. For example, all finishes and cabinets are water-based and the floor stain is a natural oil base.”
“Clean details, such as a simple floor to ceiling door casing added a modern feel to the space. Another overriding theme is the use of wood (specifically walnut) to get that mid-century vibe.”

“With two young boys, and a dad who’s not a fan of clutter, our clients wanted a visual connection between the public spaces as well as the outdoors to keep a close eye on outdoor play, while also providing a space that could easily house toys, display art and views of the bay at the same time.”
“We did a floating media console and shelves to the right of the fireplace, and a floating bench on the left. The bench allows for additional seating. The floating media console hides all of the TV components with a custom sliding door.”
“The existing fireplace was wood paneled. To modernize it and to bring in the rustic ranch / modern feel, we used a floor to ceiling stone finish to increase the height of the space visually.”
“Creating texture with floor to ceiling tile and stone, while accentuating the view with floor to ceiling windows added a more casual yet modern design aesthetic.”
Bold, graphic artwork and mid-century details create an inviting dining space. Sliding doors open up to the back porch making for the perfect indoor/outdoor space for entertaining.
The wood tones help to warm up the white walls, countertops and upper cabinetry.
