Chicago is the third largest city in the U.S. and an international hub for finance, commerce, industry and transportation. It is famous for its skyline – soaring skyscrapers of steel and glass. This creates the perfect backdrop for an industrial modern condo in the heart of the city.
The condo’s owner, a bachelor art collector and avid reader, wanted to create a place to escape from the bustle of city life that could also be used to entertain family and friends. He enlisted Emily Mackie of Inspired Interiors as his partner in this project because of her experience in creating unique, personalized spaces and with the added benefit of having a highly skilled team.
“To match the owner’s unique graffiti art collection, the team created an edgy, industrial vibe throughout the home”, says Emily. “Signature pieces, most of which were made from reclaimed items, fill each room, accented by the colorful artwork. Many of the items in the home revolve around the owner’s love of reading, and this played an integral role in the overall design of his new space.”
The condo features multiple floors, walls of glass and open floor plans which are enhanced by the modern design. A mix of warm woods, metallics and industrial lighting blend seamlessly to create a polished, comfortable home.
“Just next to the dining space sits an open kitchen and living area. As a book-inspired element, the team bought hundreds of individual letterpress letters to adorn the kitchen island, encouraging the client to enter the world each day and ‘write his own story’. The island itself acts as an art piece, defining the kitchen with its texture and detail, which stands out against the white Cambria Quartz countertop.”

“The design team worked with a local metal fabricator to design a dining room table out of an antique gate from the Barnes & Noble flagship store. To balance out the space, the team paired the table with a set of modern Cassina dining chairs.”

In the powder room, the team designed a custom vanity with gray-stained beetle kill wood shelving.

A unique light fixture and soaring windows flood the stairway with light.
This seating area features chairs and tables with sculptural shapes, creating a functional art piece.
The upstairs living room is designed for entertaining. It features multiple seating areas, a catering nook and a large patio, making it a perfect hosting space.
“When the owner struggled to find a couch shape he felt would work best, the design team solved the issue by working with a custom fabricator to build a sectional that could come apart and be reconfigured in a variety of ways.”
Throughout the home, industrial elements such as these sconces are blended with more rustic elements which help add warmth to the space.
From the 1930’s, a vintage side table with a cast iron base and stained pine top was once used in a railroad lounge car.

“A late night reader, the owner enjoyed having multiple reading areas to choose from. Aware of his passion for Porsches, the team sourced a 1970’s Porsche bucket seat and worked with a metal fabricator to build the base of the chair and install a reclining mechanism. This chair serves as one of the owner’s many reading nooks, as well as a statement piece for the living room.
“The Feizy rug has hues of gray ranging from silver to charcoal, chocolate and ecru – the colors change depending on lighting.”
Reclaimed Vintage Industrial Light: Urban Remains
“As a man who reads over 100 books a year, the owner needed a system to keep track of which books would be next on his list. To solve this need, the Inspired Interiors team designed a herringbone bookcase wall in the master bedroom to house the owner’s large book collection. The statement wall is complimented by custom-made antique card catalog nightstands and a red lighting fixture.”

Emily and her team demonstrate that industrial design doesn’t have to feel cold or austere. By incorporating the client’s artwork and unique vintage elements, they have created a vibrant and livable home.
