Established in the 1920s and well-known for its luxury estates, River Oaks, a neighborhood in Houston, serves as a picture-perfect location for this house redesign by Marie Flanigan of Marie Flanigan Interiors (MFI).
“Our clients moved into the neighborhood and enlisted our help to transform their beloved vintage house into a sophisticated and modern home. The wife is an architect by trade and was fascinated by the refined simplicity she found throughout the MFI portfolio.”
Marie started with a neutral palette and rustic wood floors and ceiling beams to honor the home’s past, then updated it with an open floor plan and clean lines. The living room is flanked by a classic fireplace at one end and a modern, sleek dining table on the other.
Traditional southern design elements like a built-in banquette, skirted ottoman and luxurious floor-to-ceiling drapes are seamlessly blended with a modern wet-bar and built-ins to create an overall feel of comfort and elegance.
“Determined to revitalize their 1920s home versus tearing it down and starting new, the couple requested a design that would remain true to the home’s more traditional architecture while bringing in elements of a more contemporary style, providing the finished home with a very timeless and polished look.”
Textured wallpaper adds warmth to the built-ins and helps draw the eye to the classic fireplace.
Large windows flood the great room with light.
Multiple seating areas provide flexibility for entertaining lots of friends or enjoying an intimate day with the family.
I love Marie’s unexpected touches like the animal-skin rug that helps define a seating area in the living room.
The rustic and refined theme is carried through to this casual dining area with the use of wicker bar stools and a graceful drum light fixture.
Can you picture yourself curling up on this banquette with a cup of tea , a good book and a fire on a cool winter afternoon?
A warm apricot rug, comfortable chairs and beautiful lighting create an inviting space for dinner parties.
A graceful staircase and wrought iron railing lead to a spacious second floor landing.
Located just off the great room, a study and a sunroom are great places to escape and relax.
At MFI, we believe that homes should reflect the people who live, work, and play within. We weave the unique stories of our clients into every inch of space we design. Marie Flanigan
By creating warm, comfortable spaces that still reflect the house’s history, Marie certainly has provided a home for old and new stories, and cherished moments.
