Window treatments can truly make a room, but can sometimes be a missed opportunity to beautifully complement your space or make a statement. Whether or not you want them to blend into the background, stand out, block out the light, or let the light shine in – the addition of window treatments is a chance to accessorize your space and show off your own personal style.

From roman shades to curtains, to blinds and shutters, motorized coverings and a diverse selection of hardwares and fabrics, there is a lot to choose from. But no need to fret – we consulted the pros! With over 40 years in the custom window treatment business in Los Angeles, Galaxy Draperies takes us through 5 things to consider when selecting the right window coverings for your space.

1. Start with some inspiration

• Create a Pinterest board and start pinning designs you love or explore Galaxy Draperies Gallery for various products and designs.

• Keep in mind what mood you want throughout your home, what emotions do you want to evoke in each room, and how do you want your window treatments to function?

2. Design for the mood you want

• Fabrics and materials need to complement each other to not only have a cohesive look, but also give the room its desired emotions. Changing up your window coverings can completely alter the way a room feels.

• Wood window blinds look amazing in the kitchen or dining room area and make you feel like you are in the countryside eating a fresh meal. Blackout motorized window treatments are perfect for a movie theater room.

• Considering what emotions you want to feel in each room will make designing custom window fashions easy. Above all else, don’t forget to add some of your spunky personality into the designs.

3. Select Fabrics

• There are so many choices out there for fabrics and materials. With any style of window treatment, the possibilities are endless with many unique color and pattern combinations to choose from.

• If you want a crisp, fresh, modern look then go with deep blacks or clean white designs. Maybe you want to go traditional with floral curtains hanging from sophisticated wood rods. It is up to you!

• You should also consider how much light you want in. You can have almost all light blocked out with blackout roman shades or energy efficient curtains. Or, use light to brighten up the living room with sheer shades for a warm, inviting environment.

4. Dazzle with hardware and accessories

• These little beauties are what truly make the difference when creating designer window fashions. The fine details can never be overlooked and we have thousands of decorative drapery hardware that make all the difference.

• Accessories to think about include curtain rods, tiebacks, finials, and curtain rings. What material do you want your curtains to hang from? Do you want them to complement your fabrics?

• Rods come in a range of stains, paints, colors, or textures based on your design. Tiebacks and finials give your curtains a grand look.

• Smooth wood finials add the designer touch to any draperies, a wood tieback can be a gorgeous addition to drapery pairs and rustic curtain rods add the finishing touches to any custom curtain design.

5. Bring your personal style throughout

• Your want to have a seamless connection between your custom shades and furniture to achieve that full “designer look”.

• Think about what decor you currently have in your home, and where you want to add more of your personal style.
