One of the hallmarks of great design is the creation of a sense of place; unifying the interior spaces with the exterior surroundings. South Yarra is a distinctively sophisticated neighborhood of Melbourne, filled with trendy restaurants, upscale shopping and prestigious real estate. For this apartment renovation, Aaron Wong, principle designer of Alexander Pollock paid homage to its luxe setting while creating a quiet, comfortable environment.
The clients, a family of four (plus their Burmese cat) were transitioning from a traditional home and ready for a change. They requested a contemporary aesthetic and low maintenance. Aaron chose a soft, timeless color palette and added quiet drama through sculptural elements, textures and modern furnishings. He also made the most of a spectacular aspect of the apartment – the outdoor space. Sumptuous furnishings, a fireplace and modern art make this terrace a true extension of the interior environment.
The open floor plan lent itself to a contemporary aesthetic which Aaron enhanced with the sleek fireplace and kitchen cabinetry. The Walter Knoll coffee table is a beautifully artistic centerpiece for the living space.
Kelly Hoppen lamps highlight a contemporary console.
Graphic and geometric touches such as the metallic cube accent tables and bold pillows in the living area add interest to the calm, neutral background.
Low, sleek furniture prevents the small study from appearing overcrowded.
I would spend my weekends camped out on this terrace enjoying the fireplace and fresh air.
With this apartment renovation, Aaron proves that sophisticated can also be welcoming and comfortable.
