For many of us, Marie Kondo’s New York Times Best Selling books, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” and “Spark Joy”, has been – well – life-changing. Her work has inspired us to simplify and declutter our lives and homes. This striking contemporary Santa Monica space is home to former punk rockers who were also greatly inspired by Marie’s methods. The family of four wanted their home to reflect their eclectic personalities and a clean, simplistic aesthetic, so they enlisted designer Lucie Ayres of 22 Interiors who is known for her originality and collaboration.
“This project really came to life because of the creativity and discerning eye of our clients. The mantra we had to abide by was simple – is it beautiful and does it make the room feel light? We carefully curated every object in every room. The client is a big fan of Marie Kondo (a Japanese organizing consultant and author) so we Kondo-’ed it up.”
Even while honoring the KonMari method, Lucie was able to convince the clients to showcase a few unique and striking art pieces and accessories that give the home its shining personality.
“The entry console and mirror are both from Made Goods.”
Bright yellow sconces add a modern touch to the classic fireplace while family heirloom art grounds it in history.
“We replaced shutters throughout all the common rooms with cotton linen drapes hung on modern iron rods.”
Custom 22 INTERIORS reversible pillows (“linen on one side, the yummiest French velvet on the other“) add softness and warmth to the neutral living room palette.

“The Anziano dining chair by Donghia is delightful in white ivory or in saddle leather, it’s black wire legs give it a gorgeous profile. The Sea Urchin pendant by Coup Studio gives the room a natural organic moment it needs.”
The Bossons plaster heads are family heirlooms.
“The Antica stool by Design Within Reach is the most comfortable counter stool you’ll ever sit on.”
Deep, rich wall colors in the family room and powder room provide a striking contrast to the overall light and airy feel of the home.
Paint: Farrow & Ball Downpipe
“The teenage daughter’s request was for an all white room. We couldn’t do ALL white, so we added some grays and lots of different textures and materials. A custom 22 INTERIORS designed bed has a side fabric panel, so it doubles as a loungy sofa for friends for the teen’s bedroom.”
This black and white bedroom for one of the daughters is kicked-up a notch with a Fireworks wallpaper design by Albert Hadley.
22 INTERIORS was started out of my true obsession to redefine and redesign any space I walk into. I constantly strive to create striking interiors with masterful layout plans for the pleasure of each of my discerning clients. Lucie Ayres
